Hypnotherapy is now a recognized method of providing relaxation and therapy. Although there are online classes, there must be a person-to-person component at some time during the training process. You can learn hypnotherapy either online or in a traditional classroom. Some schools offer a free internship upon certification.
At one time, a hypnotist was a type of magician. He would perform a stage show that included bringing a member of the audience up on the stage. The subject would then be hypnotized and told he would quack like a duck when brought out from the trance. He would do this in response to a specific word being spoken.
When brought the trance was ended, he would quack his way across the stage to the audience’s amusement. The hypnotist would eventually erase the effect the suggested word had upon him and that part of the show would be over. It was a well-received stage show but unlikely to have been authentic hypnotism.
A qualified hypnotist is currently a therapist. She is most likely educated to the masters or doctorate level and licensed to practice. She will likely add hypnotherapy to her list of qualifications and use it to relax patients during sessions. She places a patient under hypnosis to uncover troubling memories or root out core feelings that are causing maladjustment.
Hypnosis is now understood by more people. Courses are taught in accredited schools. Yes, the person without prerequisites can take the courses, but nurses, counselors and other graduates also take them. It enhances their skills in working with the population they serve.
One hypnotism school has been licensed to teach since 1978. The teachers are considered to be skilled, creative and care very much about the training of their student. As part of the training, each prospective hypnotherapist undergoes being hypnotized by a fellow student. Experiencing the hypnotic state is educational in and of itself.
The education also includes business and marketing strategies. The trained hypnotherapist can begin with no prerequisites and end with a lucrative practice in hypnotherapy. The intent is to provide hypnotherapy as one of the helping professions.
Live demonstrations are presented to teach the safe and effective forms. Other therapeutic methodologies are integrated into the practice of hypnotherapy. One example is Gestalt. The skill of hypnotizing others can be useful to nurses, mental health counselors and other health care professionals. These individuals will enter classes in hypnotherapy after being graduated and licensed in their fields of endeavor.
This is a serious educational undertaking. There will be homework assignments and handouts to study during the process. Many students who learn hypnotherapy find that, in addition to becoming trained and certified, they gain self-understanding, which greatly enriches their personal life as well.
