As a university student living abroad, this can be a very exciting time. However, there are some challenges that will come from living far away from home. There are several things you can do to combat homesickness. These tips can help you get through your transition phase and help you enjoy your international experience.
Living in another country, dealing with a new language and culture can be overwhelming. If you are feeling overwhelmed, reach out and talk to someone you trust. You may even reach out to counselors on your campus, or another international student that is going through a similar experience. Talking about shared experiences can help ease the difficult of what you are going through, at least you’ll know that you are not alone.
Being homesick is part of the process of living away from your family, friends and country, so make sure you are prepared to deal with it. Make sure you know how to call home when you need too. Do you have a favorite photo album or other memorabilia that you cherish, which gives you comfort? Bring your brown boots, those you love and remind you of your country’s hillsides. Bring a few fond memories of home with you.
Keep yourself busy. This is the time to develop your academic and social skills. Spend your time studying, working, volunteering and hanging out with new friends. When you are preoccupied with other things in your life, you will feel less homesick.
Be patient. Learning a new language and fitting into a new culture can be overwhelming. Be patient and you may even find yourself following the latest trends in men’s watches, that you once thought were silly. Talk to people from different cultures and communities. This will broaden your perspective on the outside world.
Get involved in your campus. Even though you may find comfort with students from similar backgrounds, do not forget to mingle with other students. The college experience is full of opportunity to learn about different cultures and backgrounds. Do not limit yourself to what you know best.
Stay healthy. Your parents are not there to make sure you are getting enough sleep, food and exercise. This is now your responsibility. Make sure to have a healthy balance of all of these things in your college life. Incorporate new experience with old hobbies you may appreciate. If you like designing different jewelry like men wedding bands, do not give it up. Find time to relax to do the things that bring you peace.
