Are you the type of person who feels that there are not enough hours in the day for you to complete all of your daily tasks and duties? This article gives free tips on how to manage your time in a more constructive and successful way.
Set a to do list
I now set myself a to do list which helps me to plan my time better. I have a priority list, which is the tasks which are the most important for me to complete. I will concentrate on working through these jobs first and always try to ensure that they are completed before the day ends.
If I manage to work through all of these tasks, I then start on my second list. This is a list of other important tasks which need to be completed as soon as possible but which do not particularly have to be finished today.
I then have my final list which is work that needs to be completed, however there is no immediate rush to finish them.
If at the end of the day I have certain tasks left on any of the lists, they then are added to the lists of the following day.
I have various businesses to do with stuttering therapy where the aim is to help people to obtain cheap calls, one which is offering a DVD authoring service and I also offer advice about becoming a foster parent. A to do list enables me to get the most out of my day.
Take a break
In the past when I used to struggle to work through my tasks, I would start to panic and would not allow myself a break. This I have come to realise is a big mistake. I am not sure about you however I am only able to fully concentrate for a fairly small period of time. If I just continue to work, the quality of this work will soon drop as my brain becomes tired and weary.
Rushing to complete a task is BAD
I was so keen to move onto the next task and therefore would find myself rushing to finish. What I found was that this would lead me to making lots of silly errors. After making right the wrongs I could then continue on with my day however I would have lost a lot of time which could have been better spent etc. I now work at a speed I am comfortable with. I still make errors which of course is part of life, however there are now far fewer of these.
I recently started asking myself a few questions when I found I no longer enjoyed my job. I thought to myself why would I bother doing something that I don’t enjoy at my age? Life seems too short and I figure it’s high time I go find myself a new vocation. Of course what logically follows from that is an inquisition as to what new career path I would enjoy following.
First I figured I should think why I work. The picture I always have in my head when I’m slaving away is the thought of my kids gather happily around the {christmas wreath}. I know that’s what keeps me going. The world of business is stressful and people work hard with nothing but a paycheck to look forward to.
Second, I figured I should think of stuff I do enjoy doing. I like fishing! I could be a fisherman? No that doesn’t sound as fun as the fishing I do. Something else I like is helping with my daughters softball team. I suppose I could be a school teacher. That actually would be a good job apart from the drawback of going back to school.
When I think about things realistically I know I’m stuck where I am for now. I’m close enough to retirement that I can taste it. My jobs not that bad anyway. It’s working my way up the corporate ladder that bothers me. There, that’s my solution! I’ll relax and let the world go by. I’ll no longer take my cell home during my off hours, or update spreadsheets in front of the TV. My boss can’t can me. Even if he did my severance package would take me well into retirement.
Now I can just sit back and slack, hang a decorated christmas wreath with the kids, and make some real memories. Well there that alone gives me a year to look forward to. While at work I can envision a nice relaxing holiday, and think of my new New Years resolution.
You probably like the idea of creative inspiration, that wonderful new idea that pops into you head without warning. The reality is that such bursts of creativity do happen. Einstein claimed he had great ideas come to him while he was shaving in the morning. And then there is the chemist Friedrich August Kekulé, who famously discovered the ring structure of benzene in a bizarre dream about a snake biting its tail. Here is how he described it:
“I turned my chair to the fire and dozed. Again the atoms were flitting before my eyes. This time the smaller groups kept modestly in the background. My mental eye, rendered more acute by repeated visions of this kind, could now distinguish larger structures, of manifold conformation; long rows, sometimes more closely fitted together; all twining and twisting in snake-like motion. But look! What was that? One of the snakes had seized hold of its own, and the form whirled mockingly before my eyes. As if by a flash of lightning, I awoke.”
He awoke, and he suddenly understood what the structure of the chemical benzene must be like. Of course, he had been studying the matter and thinking about it for a while. That is the important clue to how to have these creative inspirations yourself. The “aha” moment is only possible because of the work you put into something beforehand.
These creative insights don’t come from nowhere, in other words. Kekulé was a chemist, after all, and not a plumber. Had he been a plumber, he might have had a dream about a whirlpool and awoke with an idea for a new type of flushing toilet. Your creative ideas come from your knowledge and your mental work with that knowledge. These aren’t all it takes, of course, but they are necessary.
Knowledge, Work and Techniques Equals Creative Inspiration
Let’s suppose you have spent the time gaining knowledge in an area. You have worked with that knowledge, thinking about its relation to other things you know, and the implications of it. Now what else can you do to have more creative ideas, to have one of those “aha” moments of creative inspiration? Train yourself to think more creatively, by using certain questions and techniques until they are habitual. Here are three to get you started.
1. Ask yourself what other perspectives might be useful. Better yet, just consider any other perspectives, without making assumptions about which might be useful. For example, suppose you design air-conditioning systems. You might think about them from the perspective of environmentalists, or electric companies, or the stores that sell them, or of course, the consumer that buys them. The first might lead to ideas for making them solar-powered. The second might lead to a design based on cooling water at night when electric rates are low, and using the water to cool the building during the day.
2. Mentally play with the attributes of things. A baby carriage, for example, has wheels, a handlebar that you push it with, a sun-cover, etc. If you play with these things you start to imagine things like a carriage that is pulled instead of pushed, or with skis instead of wheels, for use in the winter. Imagine bigger wheels, or two wheels instead of four. What new ideas come to mind?
3. Let your mind rest. After working with knowledge and trying to consciously think of new ideas, take a break. This is what chemist Friedrich August Kekulé was doing when he fell asleep in his chair and had his creative dream. Your conscious thinking can, at some point, get in the way of your creativity. So tell your unconscious mind that it is on its own, and take a nap or do something pleasant and mentally non-taxing, like taking a walk or listening to music. You just might get one of those classic “aha!” moments of creative inspiration.
