One day when I was around my early to mid twenties, I went to the hairdressers for my monthly trim. She asked me if I had heard about the car crash, that had happened over the weekend. I hadn’t and she then went on to describe what had happened.
Three young men who were all aged twenty-two, were on the way for an evening in the local pub. One of them decided he would drive and on the way there, partly due to the fact that he was driving too quickly, he lost control of the car. His vehicle had then careered straight into a large tree, all three of the people in the car had died at the scene.
She continued that one of the men which had died, had worked in the butchers, which was only two doors away from her shop. She described the man in question, which turned out to be a person that I knew, just to say hello to. This was a person I would walk past on the majority of mornings and we would say a quick hello to each other.
During that evening my mind thought about this man. Even though he was friendly, he always looked quite stressed and did not seem that happy. My guess is that he would have perhaps been more care-free and positive had he known that he did not have long to live.
It should not have taken this kind of tragedy to bring me to my senses, but it did. I suddenly realised that we are all terminally ill as we all will die at some point in the future. I am sorry if that is a bit morbid, but it is true. Not all of us will live until retirement age, of course, and our lives could end tomorrow.
I have always been a bit of a worrier, mainly about my speech I suppose as I had a stuttering impediment. I did eventually manage to gain fluency via an intensive one-to-one stuttering therapy course but even then I started to worry about business; I work for a company which offers a DVD replication service.
I now have learnt to stop stressing so much – life, I have now learnt, is just too short.
From around the age of eleven when I started high school to the age of twenty-two I was not exactly a happy person. One person actually mentioned that I walked around like I had the weight of the world and its problems on my shoulders.
For those of you who may be pondering what issues I had at the time here is a brief description. I had a stutter which had affected me from the age of four. Stuttering put a huge dent in my confidence and made me withdraw into my shell.
I had a weight problem which was mainly caused by comfort eating when I was depressed. For whatever reason I have a small area on my scalp, the size of a small coin, where I am basically bald – this has been the source of amusement for many of my work class mates and work colleagues in the past. I was always the shortest person in the class and for a male I am well below the average height at five-foot four. I have struggled in my career originally working in a pgd clinic however I am now doing well selling external doors.Â
When I was aged about 18 I enjoyed an evening out with one of my best friends called John. John was one of the people I had always been jealous of for many different reasons. On this particular evening we were both fairly drunk and John had became quite emotional. During our conversation he told me that his father was an alcoholic and that at certain times when he arrived home worse for wear that he would hit his mom. He was very worried about this and was not sure what to do.
I have learnt that we all have problems and that in most cases there is always people worse off than ourselves. I now try to think in a much more positive way and am very happy with the cards I have been dealt.

I am thirty-six years of age and live in Birmingham, England. From the age of four I unfortunately had a speech impediment known as stuttering. This impediment basically ruined my life for eighteen years before I finally managed to overcome the stutter. This article is all about stuttering or as some people call it stammering.
Stammering or stuttering can have a dramatic effect on somebodys confidence and it certainly seemed to my crush mine. It made me accept second best in life and stopped me living my life as I wanted to.
It is extremely difficult for a fluent person to comprehend how hard it is to live your life with a speech impediment or stutter.
I now run stop stuttering courses from my home town of Birmingham. A couple of years ago one of my clients told me about a situation he had been involved in. He and his friends went to a bar one Saturday afternoon to have a few drinks. After a couple of pints he went up to the bar to order himself a drink. Unfortunately he could not speak all of the words fluently and the barman accused him of being drunk and refused to serve him. He stated to the bar worker that he was not intoxicated and that he actually had a speech impediment – the bar man just thought he was lying though.
When he got back to the table, his mates enquired as to where his pint was. He told them what had happened, this itself was very embarressing.
Steve runs The How to Stop Stuttering Centre in the UK where he offers a one-to-one intensive therapy course helping people to achieve fluency. There are also a range of self-help products available such as the powerful seventy minute stuttering therapy DVD.

There were five main reasons as to why I had a lack of confidence and a low self-esteem. I had a speech impediment, commonly referred to as a stutter or stammer. I had always had a need to be popular and I used to often worry about what people thought of me. I had a bald patch on my head and I am also quite short in height in comparison to the average male. I was also over-weight.
At the age of twenty-two I decided to go on a journey of self-improvement. I had just lost my job at the flyer printing company where I worked and had had enough of living life in the way that I had been and I therefore wanted to learn about the ways in which I could become a far more confident person, a fluent speaker and I wanted to attain a weight that I was happy with.
The solution to the weight loss was in a way quite easy to find. I was over-weight due to a lack of exercise and because I ate far too much, along with the fact that I was eating the wrong types of food.
Stuttering is a complex impediment but was something I was determined to overcome. It was far from easy to eradicate the stutter however eradicate it I did after about twelve months of working extremely hard.
I unfortunately had to accept my lack of height and also the fact that I would have a bald patch on my head for the rest of my life as there was nothing that I could do to change them.
Changing my paranoid type ways was something that I could or should be able to do. I had to learn how to become a far more care-free person and to accept that not everyone will like me. I had to become a positive thinker and to ignore the negative voices in my head.
I have now mastered all of these areas and life has never been so good; my new found confidence has helped me in my new career as an SEO consultant.
I wish you every success in your quest to find happiness.
As I was growing up through childhood into adulthood I felt that I was rather unlucky. I had a speech impediment (a stutter/stammer), a bald patch on my head which was the size of a ten pence piece, I constantly struggled with my weight (I was basically fat) and I am quite short for a male at five foot four.
I had an inner voice which I call my demons.I am not sure but I used to listen to the advice that these were demons were providing me with and would seemingly follow every word of it. It was seemingly especially worse when I was at work at the DVD authoring workshop.
At the age of twenty-two I decided to wage a war on these demons, a war I was determined to win. I started to read many books on self-confidence, thinking positive, stuttering help and mind over matter.
I had to stop being so negative, so stressful and so paranoid about what other people thought of me. I learnt that in life all you can do is to try your best. During my war, there were many battles with these horrible demons, some of which I certainly lost. I kept on talking to the demons telling them that they may have won the battle but that they will not win the war.
I did eventually win my war after quite a long period of time. I now like myself and am pleased to report that I have also overcome the speech impediment. I now enjoy a good life and I have a successful career as an SEO consultant.
At the end of the day I knew that I had to remember to ignore what the demons were telling me and to basically do the opposite of what they advised. They are the devil and they lie therefore we have to stop listening to them. I wish you every success in your quest to become more care-free.

I am sure that I am not alone in the fact that I have a large army of demons in my head. These demons are always talking to me and trying to advise me about how to react to different situations. For many years I listened and took their advice, these years were not exactly happy ones and I have now come to realise that these demons are not my friends but are actually my enemy.
At the age of four, I developed a stutter which would continue to affect my speech for the next eighteen years of my life. I was aware of what I could and could not say and was also aware of the social situations in which I was more likely to stutter.
Whenever people asked me a certain question a voice or the demons would suddenly appear from seemingly knowhere and start making me doubt my ability to answer. This voice or what I call my demons would advise me not to say that word and to substitute it for a different word. I was desperate to receive some form of stuttering help.
At one stage in my life, I decided that I wanted a career change as I was not happy working at the DVD authoring company any more. My demons reminded me, that to find alternative employment meant going through the whole interview process again. They continued that I had always struggled to talk fluently at interviews, due to the pressure factor.
I could not continue to live life this way – I had to make a major change in the way that I lived and approached life. After reading many self-help books, I realised what I had been doing wrong. These demons are not my friends; they are not bearers of positive advice. They are in fact my enemy and they are in fact ruining my life. Steve don’t go to that party, OK then I will. Steve don’t phone that lady up, OK I will, etc.
I am not trying to say that this is easy to do. I am happy to say that I have eradicated my speech demons and am now fluent, however I do still have demons in other areas of my life. I am now run my own SEO company and I am at peace for the first time in my life.
This article describes the type of stutter speech courses which are available. In general they are designed to help people who stutter to achieve fluency.
During the first couple of days of the course, this is where the speech coach normally describes the techniques which are required to overcome the stutter.
The first day is normally the most important day. This is the client’s easy day, as the coach will do most of the talking, explaining in detail around half of the speech rules required to beat the stutter. The client may well be asked to give me a short description about their life, character and about the way in which the speech impediment has affected their life. The client will have at least one further speech task on this first day, which they will be asked to complete after they have heard the first set of rules.
On the second day the client becomes more involved, starting to put into practice what they have learnt from the previous day. The remaining techniques are described and coached on this day.
The final three days are spent practising, enabling the rules to start becoming embedded as a natural part of the client’s speech.
Some of the areas included in the courses could be:
1. Why people stutter.
2. Telephone technique.
3. Interview technique.
4. Public speaking technique.
5. The speech rules:
The person who has a stutter should not worry about the contents of the stuttering course. If there is a particular section in the course that the client does not feel comfortable doing they simply do not do it – this is something that very rarely happens however as there is nothing in such a course which should make people react this way.
Each course is unique, as every stutterer is different; this is why courses are usually run on a one-to-one basis.
Stephen Hill is somebody who has overcome a stammer/stutter and who now helps other people to achieve fluency. Stephen runs one to one speech courses held in Birmingham, England. For people who are unable to attend there is a seventy minute dvd available. His main website is at http://www.stammering-stuttering.co.uk
So you have realised that speech therapy is doing very little to improve your fluency and have now decided to seek an alternative form of stuttering therapy, but what options are available for people who have this form of speech impediment?
At the age of eighteen, after having attended the traditional forms of speech therapy for the previous fourteen years, I also decided that enough was enough. I felt let down by the system, by the lack of understanding of the problems that I was having to face on a daily basis, surely there must be some treatments for stuttering out there that is better than this.
This was seventeen years ago, before the start of the internet revolution. I originally visited a number of libraries in my quest to find a cure for stuttering; unfortunately this did not provide me with the answers that I was looking for. I then looked in my local yellow pages and also went to see my local doctor but again it was as if there was not a person or therapist which specialised in the treatments for stuttering. Did nobody care?
With the aid of the world wide web it has now become a lot easier for people to find suitable therapies for stuttering and stammering. They are able to find the latest therapies for stuttering by doing a simple search on one of the major search engines, such as Google, I sure wish that this had been an option for me all those years ago.
Options in stop stuttering therapy include speech therapy courses run by people who have managed to overcome a stutter. There are courses on a group basis however by far the most sought after course are those that are on a 1 to 1 basis.
Attending a speech course is not suitable to everyone and for people who are unable to attend such a course there are a number of powerful and beneficial self-help stuttering products on the market.
