This article describes the type of stutter speech courses which are available. In general they are designed to help people who stutter to achieve fluency.

During the first couple of days of the course, this is where the speech coach normally describes the techniques which are required to overcome the stutter.

The first day is normally the most important day. This is the client’s easy day, as the coach will do most of the talking, explaining in detail around half of the speech rules required to beat the stutter. The client may well be asked to give me a short description about their life, character and about the way in which the speech impediment has affected their life. The client will have at least one further speech task on this first day, which they will be asked to complete after they have heard the first set of rules.

On the second day the client becomes more involved, starting to put into practice what they have learnt from the previous day. The remaining techniques are described and coached on this day.

The final three days are spent practising, enabling the rules to start becoming embedded as a natural part of the client’s speech.

2. Telephone technique.

3. Interview technique.

4. Public speaking technique.

The person who has a stutter should not worry about the contents of the stuttering course. If there is a particular section in the course that the client does not feel comfortable doing they simply do not do it – this is something that very rarely happens however as there is nothing in such a course which should make people react this way.

Each course is unique, as every stutterer is different; this is why courses are usually run on a one-to-one basis.

So you have realised that speech therapy is doing very little to improve your fluency and have now decided to seek an alternative form of stuttering therapy, but what options are available for people who have this form of speech impediment?

At the age of eighteen, after having attended the traditional forms of speech therapy for the previous fourteen years, I also decided that enough was enough. I felt let down by the system, by the lack of understanding of the problems that I was having to face on a daily basis, surely there must be some treatments for stuttering out there that is better than this.

This was seventeen years ago, before the start of the internet revolution. I originally visited a number of libraries in my quest to find a cure for stuttering; unfortunately this did not provide me with the answers that I was looking for. I then looked in my local yellow pages and also went to see my local doctor but again it was as if there was not a person or therapist which specialised in the treatments for stuttering. Did nobody care?

With the aid of the world wide web it has now become a lot easier for people to find suitable therapies for stuttering and stammering. They are able to find the latest therapies for stuttering by doing a simple search on one of the major search engines, such as Google, I sure wish that this had been an option for me all those years ago.

Options in stop stuttering therapy include speech therapy courses run by people who have managed to overcome a stutter. There are courses on a group basis however by far the most sought after course are those that are on a 1 to 1 basis.

Steve has helped people from many different nations including India, Pakistan, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, the USA and Australia.

Steve has been featured in the media on a regular basis over the last thirteen years and has said that he is looking forward to helping more people who have a stutter or stammer in the years to come.

A few years ago I realised the importance of setting goals and targets. I thought about what I wanted to be and which course I wanted my life to take. I wrote out three different lists of my aims for the future.

The first list included what I wanted to achieve within the next twelve months. The second list contained what I wanted to achieve within five years and the third list was my lifetime goals.

One of my goals was to do with my composite front doors business. I wanted to ensure that the world would get to know about the fact that I offer affordable composite doors.

I had read that it of benefit to write any goals or targets down to ensure that one can keep focused.

Invest time and money to reach your goals

I now had a determination to succeed and was willing to work hard to achieve my goals. To achieve anything in life takes time and dedication. One of my aims was to overcome stuttering. To do this I had to learn the art of relaxation, I have always been very hard on myself and had spent most of my life worrying about things that may happen in the future. I decided to ease up on myself and to even have monthly treats to keep me and my body happy. I did this by attending reflexology sessions and for a short period I tried aromatherapy. After working extremely hard with copious amounts of dedication I did manage to achieve fluency – I was very proud of my efforts as you can no doubt imagine.

Avoid negative people

There are people out there who try to bring me down. They attempt to do this by off the cuff comments they make or just by the way they seem to look down on me. They would look down their noses at me. These type of people have caused me many sleepless nights and have had a negative affect on my self-confidence.

Life is now good and my business career has now taken off and I am now working with a company who offer DVD authoring which I have to say is very enjoyable.

The popularity and demand for the one-to-one communication therapy courses for stuttering is growing every year. The courses are normally held over a five-day period however there are also a two and three day option available. The courses themselves are run by a person who knows all about the subject of stammering and stuttering due to the fact that he had this type of speech impediment for eighteen years of his life before managing to achieve fluency when he was aged twenty-two.

These “stuttering courses” are held in the UK, in the second largest city of Birmingham. The How to Stop Stuttering Centre has been offering these speech courses since 1996 and Steve Hill who runs them has regularly been featured within the media during that time including a front page appearance on the much respected Daily Telegraph.

Steve has also produced a number of self-help products for the people who are not able to attend a stuttering speech course in England. These include a stuttering therapy audio book, a stuttering therapy DVD and a stuttering therapy e-book.

To achieve fluency I realised that I needed to start thinking in a much more positive manner; out went the negativity and in came a whole new “I can do it” approach. This really is the only way to go and I only regret that I did not realise this a whole lot earlier.

When I had a stutter, it created many different forms of emotions within me. I was actually ashamed of having this speech impediment and did not want to discuss the problem with anybody. My family, especially my parents, even to this day are unaware of most of the difficulties that stuttering caused me, during my time at school and in my late teens. I rarely confided in my parents as to how bad things were for me. I was not the type of person that liked to talk about their problems; especially when it came to the stutter. I would instead just go to my bedroom and attempt to forget it.

I also felt quite sorry for myself. I always believed that I was a decent person and did not think that I deserved to have this horrible stutter. There were many people in my class who in my opinion deserved to have the stutter much more than I did, however in truth I would not wish a stutter on anybody.

I was a person who felt like a second class citizen due to the fact that I had this speech impediment. I was not able to socialise with the ease as what everybody else seemed to, and had many traumatic experiences in the classroom when attempting to read out of a book for example.

Even though I had a stuttering problem, I could at times talk quite well. I found it difficult to comprehend as to why I could speak fluently to some people but not to others. This caused me many frustrations.

When I was about sixteen, I started to drink alcohol. This had a major impact on my speech as I could talk perfectly well when I was drunk. This showed me that it was possible to “stop stuttring”.

Speech therapists and negative national associations, have for years attempted to convince me to accept my stutter and have told me that there is no cure for stuttering. How can this be right, if I was constantly drunk, I would be fluent, there is a cure in itself. Of course it is not right or healthy to be constantly drunk but I am sure you know what I mean.

I found certain tasks very hard to accomplish when I had the stutter. Making and answering telephone calls was especially hard for me. I look back now and can not believe that I coped with working in an office environment for six years, at a time when I had the stutter. I remember traveling to work feeling sick in my stomach through the stress and fear.

Ordering drinks and food at the bar, introducing people to each other, attending meetings and job interviews were other aspects of my life which were made all that more harder by my inability to talk fluently.

My advice to people who have a stuttering problem is to not give up, believe in yourself and your own ability to one day achieve fluency. Beware of those who spread negativity such as those people who attempt to convince you that there is not a cure for stammering/stuttering – they are wrong. Most of the people who say this to you will have never had a stutter and will have no idea how our brains work.
