I have had many periods in my own life when I have been downright miserable and unhappy. The stress of everyday life has taken its toll and I have struggled to see any light at the end of the tunnel.

Before I continue on with this article I would like to point out that I am not involved within the depression industry or sector, I personally work within DVD authoring, as well as offering cheap holidays and on a part basis helping people to obtain cheap calls.

Over the last few months I have worked extremely hard to find solutions to eradicate my issues with depression. I am now much more able to cope with these type of situations. I will not try and kid you that I never become down and depressed. Yes there are times when things start to get the better of me but the difference now is the fact that I have the tools and techniques to enable me to quickly return to a happy state of mind.

The first thing I do when I start to feel a bit down or unhappy is to write a list of all the things that are making me feel this way. Instead of doing what I used to do, which was to stress so much about each of them, which only makes each problem even bigger, I now look at each item on the list and try to find a solution.

To say that this is hard to do would be an understatement. After living one way for so long it is far from easy to suddenly change. But change I must and change I have – I have realised that there is only one way to think in life and that it to think positively. Some of the items on the list are hard to find solutions for. It is then a case of talking to myself; to my inner voices if you like. I remind myself that worrying does not help any given situation and that all I can do in life is to try my best. At the end of the day what is the worst thing that can happen?

I have realised that I seem to get down and depressed when I am over tired. Now when I feel over-tired, I ensure that I go to bed a lot earlier than normal over the next few days and try to avoid drinks like coffee, late at night, which can keep me awake. To help me to sleep I always read a book which not only tires my eyes but also helps to take my mind off the things that I am worried about. I have also been known to have a small snooze in the afternoons to help me to catch up on any lost sleep.

I feel fortunate to have two young children. They seem to be full of life and do not seem to have a care in the world. Both children have totally changed my life in a positive way and are a bundle of fun and joy. When starting to feel a bit down and depressed, I spend as much time as I can with my children as they are what makes me happy and smile. I am now able to fight back against the demons in my head and I am also able to bounce back to good effect when something goes wrong. Possibly the most important change however is the fact that I now really appreciate what I have in life rather than doing what I used to do which was to focus on what I believed I did not have.

The modern world we live in moves incredibly quickly, with lots of people living their lives by deadlines and efficiency. Whilst productivity may increase in the short term by adopting this ideology, it is not a sustainable healthy way to live and in fact many doctors have warned of the dangerous implications of this type of stressful lifestyle. Indeed, this is evident in the fact that over 30% of the population suffer from some form of work-related stress at some point in their lives. Regular breaks away from stressful environments is among the top recommendations made by doctors all over the country to help combat anxiety-related health problems. Here are some details as to why this is so effective.

Hormone rebalancing. When you are under stress or anxiety there is a cocktail of hormones released into the body which act to make you more alert and give you faster access to energy stores. This is necessary in acute situations, but if these hormones are present in the body for any great length of time, they begin to effect the overall functioning and can lead to problems such as heart strain, muscle soreness and stomach ulcers among other things. When you come away from high-pressured environments, your body gets a break essentially from the hormones and can re-balance itself.

Emotional Filtering. The emotional importance of taking a break is often underrated, but it is in fact vital that people give themselves the opportunity to gain some perspective on their issues and re-prioritize them. Going on a luxury cruise or visiting a health spa will give you time away to clear your head, sort out your priorities and help you to get a better picture of the direction you are heading. If you don’t live near the sea then river cruises such as Oceania cruises will do just fine.

Spirit Wellness

Wai Lana Yoga for De-stressing

Coping with anxiety Throughout our lives we are constantly challenged in so many ways. Quite often, we are become over-stressed. If we don’t give sufficient time to the wellness of the spirit, or soul, we lose our ability to function properly.

Anxiety attacks

Some people get anxiety attacks. The attacks can range from extremely mild to unbelievably severe. We get anxiety attacks is we do not have a sense of peace within ourselves. Anxiety attacks stem from having too much stress you can’t handle it. So it’s important to learn how to de-stress and regularly do so. Try doing relaxing exercises like tai chi, qi gong, or yoga. For starters, Wailana yoga beginner’s workout is safe, relaxing and fun.

Panic attacks

Having experienced these panic attacks first hand for some time, I can attest to their reality. Every event, no matter how small, can add to the panic. The person experiencing these attacks feels as if they have lost control over their ability to function. They cannot meet deadlines; they aren’t able to provide for their family, there are a host of reasons that cause us to come to the place of loss of control. But there is a solution, don’t worry.

Finding rest in the ever changing, fast paced world

Despite all the technological advancements today, stress is something everyone faces. We drown out any opportunity to connect with ourselves during the course of our day, because we schedule everything, multi-task everything, and leave no breaks for introspection. It’s impossible to listen to your inner needs, if you’re talking on the phone, listening to the radio, or interacting with your children.

You can use technology to relax

The good thing is we can use the very same things that stress us out to de-sress us. We have audio, video, and even massage clinics, television shows, which can help us de-stress. More than ever before, information on staying healthy is available. For example, WaiLana Yoga program makes available everything we need to de-stress- exercise, good food, breathing techniques, aromatherapy, and yoga meditation. What more to ask for? What keeps us from getting de-stressed reguarly then? The biggest detriment is our lack of discipline and devotion to our own health and well-being. What we tend to forget during this age of super-human feats, is that the only way to sustain the super-human person, is to keep that person, all aspects of that person, well.

Wholistic wellness

Holistic wellness is only possible when body, mind, and spirit are in union, and there is inner peace. The wellness of our spirit or soul affects all other parts of our person, as evidenced in the presence of panic attacks, mental breakdowns, and the inability to cope. The need to attend to our wellness needs should be added to our daily “to do” list, so that we schedule in enough time for our selves!

With the way the world is today, it’s vitally necessary that we all learn how to manage worry and uncertainly. Despite misguided opinion to the contrary, worry generally get’s you nowhere.  In fact, worry reduces our ability to function well.

Worry is imagining future unpleasant or unwanted outcomes as if they already happened.  It robs the present moment of its joy.  Done regularly, worrying warps a person’s ability to see reality clearly and robs them of their vitality.

The good news is, the degree to which we spend our time in worrying is largely under our control – although some would have you believe otherwise.

For example, many people attribute their worry to outside events.  They believe that feeling anxious is the best response to a situation.  As a result they have no control over it.

Others believe that worry is necessary and useful.

There are many such fallicies in circulation.

So to begin freeing yourself from destructive anxiety, you need to consider your beliefs concerning the role worry plays in your life.  What do you think it accomplishes?  Do you think it’s a productive use of time?  There has to be some percieved benefit for you to worry.  If you don’t recognize it, it will be harder to let worry go.

As I mentioned, some people harbor the notion that worry is necessary and productive. These people believe that worrying is a sign of maturity and being responsible, or that worrying is a way to figure out an answer to a problem.

Those beliefs are rubbish.

Worrying is actually a poor use of time.  Instead of helping you find a solution, it keeps you focused on the problem, not it’s solution.  The productive thing to do is to spend only enough time on what the problem is and what might go wrong as it takes to identify the issues, then focus on working on the solution.

Some people worry because they think that it’s somehow protective.  Bad things won’t happen if they worry about them.

That feeling sounds a lot like superstition.  All worry does is keep you from enjoying the present moment. When someone worries, their mind is filled with bad possble outcomes that most likely will never happen.

The more you examine your beliefs about worry youll likely realize that it’s hurting rather than helping you.  It’s my belief that we’d all be less stressed if we spent less time worrying and more time imagining a brighter future.

Here’s a site that will help you start to Free Yourself From Worry immediately.  Click on that link and you’ll get information you can apply today to start to get worry under control

And actually, you may want to check out the home page on that site.  It has a bunch of information on health and wellness, stress management and just living well in general.  Here’s the address:

I recently started asking myself a few questions when I found I no longer enjoyed my job. I thought to myself why would I bother doing something that I don’t enjoy at my age? Life seems too short and I figure it’s high time I go find myself a new vocation. Of course what logically follows from that is an inquisition as to what new career path I would enjoy following.

First I figured I should think why I work. The picture I always have in my head when I’m slaving away is the thought of my kids gather happily around the {christmas wreath}. I know that’s what keeps me going. The world of business is stressful and people work hard with nothing but a paycheck to look forward to.

Second, I figured I should think of stuff I do enjoy doing. I like fishing! I could be a fisherman?  No that doesn’t sound as fun as the fishing I do. Something else I like is helping with my daughters softball team. I suppose I could be a school teacher. That actually would be a good job apart from the drawback of going back to school.

When I think about things realistically I know I’m stuck where I am for now. I’m close enough to retirement that I can taste it. My jobs not that bad anyway. It’s working my way up the corporate ladder that bothers me. There, that’s my solution! I’ll relax and let the world go by. I’ll no longer take my cell home during my off hours, or update spreadsheets in front of the TV. My boss can’t can me. Even if he did my severance package would take me well into retirement.
Now I can just sit back and slack, hang a decorated christmas wreath with the kids, and make some real memories. Well there that alone gives me a year to look forward to. While at work I can envision a nice relaxing holiday, and think of my new New Years resolution.

stress

Everyone has been in a situation where things are going great for you, but a friend, loved one, or coworker is under a great deal of stress. Depending on how these people in your life deal with stress, it can place a great deal of stress on you and other people around them. When people get extremely stressed, there are a few behavior patterns that people tend to assume, depending on their personality type and the problems at hand. The two stress-induced personality types that are probably the most well known can be called the extreme-anger and sky-is-falling types.

The extreme-anger type is characterized by lashing out at people around them for small things that normally would not be a problem, or turning talking points into shouting points. When dealing with the extreme-anger type, you have to remember that what they are freaking out about is not the problem, just an opportunity to vent. Instead of focusing on what your angry comrade seems to be upset about, you have to side-step that conversation and move on to the root problem that is bothering them. By helping the extreme-anger type open up about their problems, you get a better look at them as a person and have the opportunity to tell them how their problems appear to a person who is not enraged. Hopefully, you can help them to move on and deal with their problems directly instead of making life difficult for everyone else.

Another pattern many people fall into when they are stressed is the sky-is-falling mentality. This is in many ways the opposite of the extreme anger type. The sky-is-falling person knows what is bothering them and is usually willing to share the laundry list of current stress factors in their life. Instead of lashing out at people around them, they feel sorry for themselves, and loath the infinite number of things that are keeping them from enjoying life. Other than solving their problems, there is usually not much you can do for the sky-is-falling type. Trying to console them can be somewhat effective, depending on just how bleak they feel their situation is, but most likely their mood will not improve considerably until they have made decent progress on solving or eliminating their stress factors.

Remember that everyone has patterns of behavior when feeling stressed out, and that there are more than just the two patterns discussed in this article. Recognizing your own behavior when the tension rises is just as important as learning about the patterns of others, and trying to change our behavior to help others better deal with us is just as important as figuring out the behavior of people around us.

Stress has been widely reported in the news as a health epidemic for more than twenty five years now and the situation is continuing to worsen as an increasing number of workers report that they are increasingly suffering stress in the workplace. Indeed the workplace now provides the leading environment for the development of stress among American adults. However stress levels have also been rising for children and teenagers in recent years and a lot of people now link this to a loss of religious and family values, a lack of social support and corporate greed.

Nowadays, stress is more of a danger than it was a decade ago and looks to be more prevalent and more invasive than ever with far more stress coming from psychological rather than physical threats.

Stress causes a raised heart rate and greater blood flow in turn producing higher blood pressure. Levels of blood suger also increase to give the body the additional fuel it requires to fight off stress and our body is programmed to move blood away from the stomach when under stress in order to provide additional strength in the legs and arms as part of what is normally called our “flight or fight” response.

Stress contributes to chronic depression and anxiety together with gastrointestinal and skin problems and disrupts the working of many of the body’s main organs. It can also create an impairment of the immune system that in unable to fight off viral disorders from the common and not particularly serious cold to serious diseases such as AIDS and cancer.

Stress in the workplace directly influences things like employee absenteeism and productivity and the business climate increasingly worsens with competition nowadays at an all-time high. The pressure which is placed on employees to produce and the continual concern about job security can result in several conditions including back pain, neck pain, hypertension, stroke, diabetes, ulcers and heart attacks.

Stress comes from many different quarters including simply sitting in front of a computer screen for seven hours each day or more, meeting quotas or having someone checking on you constantly. In these situations the results are generally seen as depression and several physical ailments which result in lost work time.

Taking the steps needed to manage the stress you have in your life may be the nicest gift you can give yourself and your family and a few fairly simple alterations to your life can make a huge difference to how you handle stress. For example, taking just 20 minutes out of your day to walk will reduce your stress as will talking to friends, meditation and eating a healthy diet. Take the time necessary to learn a few relaxation techniques because deep breathing and relaxation exercises can considerably reduce your stress levels.
