There are are many tips and methods for creating change and becoming more confident as a result. We are able to only make progress by giving up old habits in favour of the new ones; by altering old beliefs. It demands a different type of perseverance.

The resistance we face here originates from inside.

We can be our own worst enemy.

We grow to be expert at uncovering ‘evidence’ to support our present beliefs and talking ourselves into retaining them. Conversations like “I knew that would take place,’ ‘It’s usually the same”. And worst of all, “‘I’m never any good at performing that kind of thing.’ Therefore we form a comfort zone that puts a limit on our capabilities.

We have to choose knowingly to set ourselves brand new beliefs and persist with ourselves in adopting them.

  • Write down a belief you’ve got that prevents you performing at your best (“I can’t walk into a room full of strangers.”, as an example).
  • Write down the self-talk that goes with this belief (“I am hopeless at this.”).
  • Identify the comfort zone this places you in (“Meeting total strangers fills me with fear so I don’t incorporate it within my set of abilities.”).
  • Express the exact opposite of your restricting belief (“I look forward to walking into a space full of other people and really feel genuinely positive about doing so.”).
  • Write down the new and positive self-talk that matches this thinking (“Walking right into a room full of total strangers is one thing I feel confident about.”).
  • Describe the brand new and broadened comfort zone this puts you in.
  • What is it like possessing this new thinking?
  • Imagine yourself whenever you have this new perception (“I see myself walking right into a space filled with strangers, being made welcome and chatting confidently.”).
  • As an individual with this new found perception, go for a walk and behave as if you are living this new perception; become your brand new understanding.

Now persevere until eventually your new perception develops into your own “real belief”.
