Everyone at some point in their lives will want to learn a skill, pick up a hobby or learn to do something they’ve never done before. Some don’t have the time, and others simply don’t think they can. This is where mind tools come into play. Using mind tools to learn and organize information related to the desired skill gives users a better chance at succeeding and excelling in the hobby and provides an overall better experience for the individual. Because hobbies will vary, I have used an aspiring guitar player as an example. Below are the most important elements to learning any skill and how mind tools can help.

Background information.Anyone who is serious about learning a new skill should have already began researching the topic and learning all they can about it. The aspiring guitar player should enjoy researching, making a decision on the music style they like best, the guitar that displays this style best and look for pointers and tips on how their favorite guitar player became so great. Mind tools such as mind maps and word processing applications allow the guitar player to record and organize all of this information, so that it can be easily accessible.

Instructions. Unless someone plans to learn in the ins and outs of their desired hobby all on their own, some form of guidance will be needed. This guidance can be videos, links and instruction booklets. In any case, using a mind map to breakdown the instructions in a way that is most comprehensive to the user is one of the most loved benefits of mind tools. Instead of forcing users to record information a specific way, users can feel free to have fun and freedom with the mind tool and record information as they would like. Mind maps can help the musician remember notes, chords and any other important tips and shortcuts that may have otherwise been overlooked or forgotten.

Practice. Practice makes perfect and without it, there is no real chance of success. Now that you know all of the background information, it’s time to put what you know into action. Mind maps are more helpful in this situation. The organizing tools included in mind mapping software makes it easy and a lot of fun to set up a schedule for practicing and honing your skill. For the guitar player, taking lessons, starting a band or just applying what you know alongside a friend would give you the practice time that you need.

Learning a skill is rewarding when the individual finds a fun way of organizing and retaining the information needed to excel at the hobby. Whether you have some extra time on your hands and would like to learn something new, or your employer requires you to take some extra training, using a mind tools like mind maps would be the best route to take. To view a mind tool in action, take a look at the attached mind map and use it as a guide for helping you to dive into the next project.

The older one gets, the more attention he or she must pay to avoiding health-related issues. Such avoidance often involves making routine visits to one’s doctor to ensure that everything is in working order. Yet, how does one manage making, and keeping, the many appointments necessary to stay on top of one’s health? One answer to this question is to try a Visual Mind Map. With a Visual Mind Map, one can literally “map out” everything he or she needs in order to manage routine doctor visits, from dates and times to appointment type, in one clear and spatially formatted diagram. In addition, he or she can add images and colorful graphics to the map to make the map more conceptual and appointments easier to remember. Visual Mind Maps, thus, offer individuals an effective and efficient means of keeping up with one’s health.

What are Visual Mind Maps and How Are They Created?

A Visual Mind Map is “a means of organizing information that allows individuals to create diagrams, pictures, and other graphic visuals in order to show the relationship between ideas or other types of information”. With a Visual Mind Map, the creator makes use of colors and symbols to construct the map and represent his or her ideas in a non-linear format. When creating a Visual Mind Map, the individual usually begins by showing the key concept or main idea of the information as a graphic image, located in the center of the map. Any themes surrounding the main idea are shown on “branches” that are attached to the central topic. Subsequent themes of less importance are then attached to these branches using “child branches”, and so on. The resulting diagram is a “map” of the ideas and information presented that includes the images, visual graphics, and colors the individual associates with each of the themes and ideas.

Managing Routine Doctors Visits Using a Visual Mind Map

A man, nearing 50, has just read a magazine article detailing the routine physical checkups a man his age should have on a yearly basis. Worried about his ability to remember and manage all these appointments, he decides to organize a list for himself using a Visual Mind Map. He commences his map by, first, placing an image representing his yearly doctor appointments in the map’s center. He next divides his mind map into different sections, one for each appointment type, via “branches” that he attaches to the central topic. On “child branches”, the man lists the particulars of each appointment type, such as when and where to make the appointment and doctor contact information. As he makes each appointment, he lists its date and time on “twigs” that he attaches to each “child branch”. Throughout his Visual Mind Map, the man uses any graphics or colors he associates with the information he is listing in order to make it easier for him to recall. When he has completed his map, it looks similar to the attached Visual Mind Map diagram.

Keeping Up With Appointment Visits Using the Visual Mind Map

As the year progresses, the man finds that he has no trouble making and keeping suggested doctor appointments. Once a month, he simply consults his map to find out which appointments he needs to make for the month, and lists the specific dates and times for each on the respective “branches” as he makes them. The man, thus, finds the process of managing routine doctors visits using a Visual Mind Map much easier than using an appointment book; he does not have to flip through pages of a calendar to find information because it is neatly listed in one diagram he has posted on his bulletin board. The Visual Mind Map has, therefore, given the man an effective and efficient way to ensure that he remains in good health.

Mind Mapping software can be instrumental in organizing a variety of information. Mind Mapping software is particularly useful in constructing a budget. Most people find budgets an essential component of a successful financial plan, and software tools for creating budgets are quite popular. Most traditional budget-creation software presents financial information using primarily numbers and spreadsheets. Mind Mapping software, by contrast, allows for the organizing of financial information using pictures and visual graphics in a spatially “mapped” out format. Mind Maps, therefore, have the advantage of allowing you to create a budget in a creative and more intuitive manner.

What is Mind Mapping Software?

Mind Mapping software is any software that is used to create diagrams, pictures, and other graphic visuals in order to show the relationship between ideas or other types of information.1 With Mind Maps, the key concept or main idea of the information being presented is represented by a central image, located in the center of the map. Any themes surrounding the main idea are shown on “branches” that are attached to the central image, with subsequent themes of less importance attached by “twigs”. The resulting diagram is a “map” of the information and ideas shown in a spatial, rather than linear, format. Moreover, along with the ideas shown on the map are images, visual graphics, and colors that the constructor of the “map” associates with each of the themes and ideas. Mapping out information in this manner is widely believed to allow the brain to process the information in manner more consistent with its natural functioning.

Using a Mind Map to Organize a Budget

In general, the main purpose of a budget is to allocate a certain amount of money to various expenses, so that the money is not overly spent in one area, while leaving the other areas in a deficit. Thus, when constructing a budget, the most important components are the expected income and expected expenses/financial outlays to which the money will be allocated during the given time period. Consider the attached Mind Map diagram of a sample monthly budget. The overall expected income for the time period is represented in the center of the map. Attached to this central image are “branches” showing the various expenses the income will cover, as well as the amount of each expense. Any subcategories of the expenses are attached to the expense “branches” via “twigs”. Throughout the Mind Map, colors and graphics associated with each expense are used. The result is your monthly budget, that is “mapped out” in a spatial, visually stimulating and easily organized manner.

Mind Mapping Software vs. Traditional Budget-Creation Software

As mentioned earlier, traditional budgeting software often organizes financial information in a very boring, numerically driven format. While all of the information needed to clearly view the information is present, the information is usually visually tedious, making it more difficult to process. Mind Mapping software, by contrast, allows one to organize important financial information in a visually easy and interesting format, driven by colors and images, rather than data. This intuitive form of data organization can be quickly processed; a person can pick out the key components of his or her budget, as well as find specific expense items, with a just quick skim of the map.

Many home organization tips pertain to clutter. Many people become know as packrats. There are different reasons why people keep things. It may be a gift or an heirloom. There may be sentimental value attached. You may hate to get rid of something because you paid a lot for it. This is the question to ask yourself, no matter what the reason may be. Is it worth it?

Family heirlooms are very special. A generational piece is priceless. By all means, you should feel no guilt by keeping it. However, if you have a pile of things left from a loved one that has passed away, you may need to reevaluate why you are hanging on to them. Charities abound that will accept clothing or other items. Someone may actually be able to use those items you just have sitting in storage. Wouldn’t you late mother like to know her dishes were being used rather than just collecting dust?

Everyone loves receiving gifts. Many gifts end up never being used and stuffed under a bed or in the attic. If you haven’t used something in years, it’s okay to give it away to someone else who may like it. We just can’t use everything we are given. Don’t feel guilty if you don’t have out every knick knack that Aunt Betty gave you!

Some people are very sentimental while others are not. For those who are, try these home organization tips. You may hold many things dear, but you may need to reevaluate why you are keeping them. Determine if you want to keep it because you wish to share it with your children or is it simply hard to give up because you’ve had it so long? Do you feel joy when you see it or do you just feel guilt when you consider getting rid of it? We would probably never miss some of what we have. Keep it if you have doubts. Look at the item again later.

Even if it costs good money, is it really worth it if you don’t use it? Is it really worth waiting to see if that suit or dress eventually comes back in style? Couldn’t you use the space more? Someone less fortunate may love to have that dress that you never wear. If the item is collecting dust and has been for years, it may be time to say goodbye.

Why do we keep things? There are many reasons. No matter the reason, if we keep everything, clutter becomes a major problem; it creates stress and we lose valuabe space. Take a good look at what you have and decide how important it is for you to keep it. That’s a very important step to getting organized.
