EFT tapping, or Emotional Freedom Techniques, is useful for just about anything challenging in life.  But could you use if for grief?  If a loved one dies?

When death just happened, there are things to take into consideration.  Think about the following Do’s and Don’ts when you think about using tapping therapy for grief.

Don’ts
1.  Unless they ask you specifically, don’t force EFT on anyone right after a death

2. Even though we are normally advised to be specific with EFT, it’s better to tap using general phrases when grief is fresh.  Instead of tapping on the raw truth, tap using general phrases, like “what just happened,” or “this sadness.”

3. Unlike typical EFT, you don’t expect the person to finish up feeling totally happy.  There are stages of grieving that people transition through. It can take months or years to fully process a death.

4. Unless you’ve been asked to do formal EFT by the grieving person, I don’t suggest you try it.


Grief EFT Do’s
1. Surrogate tapping is great for grieving people.  What you do is simple tap on yourself as if you are grieving.

2. If you have permission, or if you know it would be good, gently move into doing EFT with the person who’s grieving.  No words are necessary when the emotion is strongly felt.

3. Even tapping without words is useful for resolving the shock or horror of the situation.  With permission, you can tap on the grieving person’s fingertips while they express what they are thinking and feeling.

4. Tell them that anything they’re thinking or feeling is OK.  Feelings of anger or resentment are common and normal.  People feel a whole range of emotions after death.

5.  Be willing to wait weeks, months or even years before the grieving person is open to your tapping help.

6. Let the person who’s grieving lead with their thoughts and emotions.  Venting is the most appropriate thing to do at this stage.  It’s not necessary to impose any type of choosing to be happy.  That would likely bring up lots of resistance.

Have you heard of EFT Tapping – Emotional Freedom Tapping?  Is it something you know how to do?

My purpose here is to, tell you what Emotional Tapping is and describe the basic method.

For starters, EFT was invented by Gary Craig, Emotional Freedom Technique founder.  What you do is tap with your fingertips, on points on your body’s energy system on your head, face and your torso. While tapping, you tune in to an emotional issue..

Your thoughts and feelings about the event shift.  Here is an example of this tapping technique.

Let’s say you have a disturbing memory from your childhood. You got in trouble for something you did.  Remember the bad feelings of feeling ashamed?

Over the course of your life, you’ve continually believed something was wrong with you, even though you may not be consciously aware of that belief.
Here is the way you’d use EFT therapy to clear the disturbing emotions and beliefs you still hold from that event.

You tune into the memory of the event while tapping on various energy meridian points on your head, face and torso.  There are eight tapping points that are commonly used by an EFT practitioner.

So, focusing on the event, and tuning into your feelings about it, you use your fingers to tap on the EFT points.  You can also put your focus on the belief that was formed during the event. – that you are defective or that something’s wrong with you.

What happens, is that after tapping the points and tuning into the event, your reaction to the memory alters.  You can go from feeling ashamed to feeling peaceful.  The emotions you feel can change from resentment, upset, frustrated, overwhelmed – to a state of calm and understanding.  It is typical to start out feeling insecure and end up feeling confident.

As when you learn any worthwhile skill, there are levels of sophistication and skill you can gain.  But with a simple Youtube EFT video, you may be super-jazzed to learn more about EFT.

Here are 5 tapping technique tips to help build your Emotional Freedom Tapping skill and help you get the most out of your tapping therapy.

1. Write it Down

Thoughts have the tendency to keep repeating themselves and going in circles.

When you make a list of what’s bothering you, you’re much less likely to write the same thing over and over.

Take the time to make a list of what you’re thinking and feeling about your tapping subject.You can use the things on your list as your tapping script.

2.  Know What’s Keeping You Safe

Whenever you want to change, there’s a part of you that wants you to stay the same.  That part’s job is to keep you safe. 

Complete this sentence to find out how you’re keeping yourself safe. 

“It won’t be safe to ______ (fill in the blank with the change you’re planning), because…”

Listen to what comes up and use what you hear as tapping phrases.

3.  What if… Tapping

You can tap in a more positive future for yourself.Imagine some ways you’d like to be different, things you would like to do or have in your life. 

While tapping, complete a What if… statement at each point.  If you want to increase your financial abundance, you might tap, “What if I doubled my income?What if I made more money every month?”

4.  Feel your Feelings

Your body tells you what emotion you’re feeling.  You know what anger feels like, anxiety, excitement 

Any easy and effective tapping therapy technique is to tap while noticing your physical sensations. Keep tapping and noticing until your body relaxes.

5.  Ask Yourself

I bet you sometimes think you can outrun your uncomfortable emotions.But you cannot usually.Ways to distract yourself include work, fun and food, the the disturbing emotions will still be there, reducing your energy and dulling your brilliance. 

But you can easily find out what’s bothering you and use that info to clear your discomfort. 

Get quiet and ask inside what’s wrong.  Listen to the answers you hear.Tap on those statements.

Use these five emotional tapping techniques to increase your tapping skill and attract greater abundance into every area of your life.

I am a huge fan of Emotional Tapping.  Why?  Because my life is dramatically different since I learned it.
Before I encountered Emotional Freedom Tapping and fell in love with it, here’s how dismal my life was:
– 25 pounds overweight
– chronically exhausted
– binged on carbs every night
– hated the discomfort of being around other people
– didn’t like myself
– hated my work
– anxious all the time
– felt hopeless about my life
– everything I did was a struggle
– procrastinated like crazy
– I was an emotional wreck
Then I learned about EFT.  The first time I heard about it, I didn’t give it a chance.  It looked too silly.  How could it possibly work?  I felt like a monkey.
How could anything so dumb be of any value.  So I passed.
Then some time later I ran across it again.  This time I gave it a chance.  I learned as much as I could.  I started tapping on everything. 
The best choice I made was to do Gary Craig’s Personal Peace Procedure.  It’s one of the best tapping therapy techniques around.  What that entails is this:
– List all the disturbing events from your life you can recall.  If your list isn’t over a hundred, keep writing.
– Do EFT tapping on every event on the list.
Just do that.  Sounds simple – well it is simple.  But you’ve got to be a hero to do it.
I started tapping on my list.  I tapped on on a couple of events every morning before getting out of bed .  And in the afternoon I’d tap when taking a walk.  And I’d go for a walk in the afternoon and tap on a couple more events then.
About ten days into it, a miracle happened.  I no longer had to eat and eat and eat every night.  I had lost that nightly anxiety
Then an avalanche of improvements followed.  I felt more creative than ever.  My business increased.  My relationships got easier.  And everything just keeps improving.

Have you met Resistance?  If you are a human being, living on the planet Earth, you have met Resistance.

Resistance poses in every possible disguise.  It looks like exhaustion, sleepiness, illness, distraction, new interests, lost interest and procrastination.  Resistance is the main force keeping us from living the life we were meant to live.

If you want to read an entertaining, inspiring and informative book on what keeps us stuck and small, read Steven Pressfield’s The War of Art.

In this article, I chose three of passages from Pressfield’s book.  Then I suggest questions you can ask yourself to learn more about your own inner Resistance and use your answers in EFT tapping.

Take your answers and use them in Emotional Freedom Tapping.  The simplest way to do that is to state one of your answers at each of the tapping points.  Here’s more info about tapping technique tips.

From Pressfield:  Most of us have two lives.  The life we live, and the unlived life within us. Between the two stands Resistance.

I know you’ve had glimpses of your unlived life.  You get these glimpses late at night, when you’re in nature or when faced with difficult or painful life circumstances.

The power of these moments opens a window into our possible future.

Answer these questions to help you understand the nature of your own Resistance. 

If you lived your unlived life, what would you have to give up?
It wouldn’t be safe to live your unlived life because… (finish that statement)
Who would you upset
Would you know yourself if you lived the life you’re not living?

By tapping on the meridian points while answering the questions, you help to narrow that gap between who you are and who you want to be.

Pressfield Says:  Look in your own heart.  Unless I’m crazy, right now a still small voice is piping up, telling you as it has ten thousand times, the calling that is yours and yours alone.

Sit down, tune inside and pose these questions.

What does my heart have to say?
What do I hear from my still small voice?
What is my unique calling?

Use your answers as your EFT script.

Here’s Pressfield:  Resistance is not a peripheral opponent.  Resistance arises from within.  It is self-generated and self-perpetuated.  Resistance is the enemy within.

Answer these questions for insight into the enemy within.

What is your biggest enemy within?
How do you self-generate your Resistance?
How do you tell yourself that the enemy is outside of you?
In what ways do you perpetuate Resistance?

Tap on your answers.  That activity will help bridge the gap between you lived and your unlived life.  It will help enlist the enemy within to be your ally.  Emotional Tapping is the best way I’ve ever seen for transforming your life.

Do you want to know what’s bad about emotional tapping?

In fact, if you don’t do EFT tapping, it’s a complete failure.

And why you don’t do it?

I bet you’ve got some great reasons. Here are ten common reasons for not doing tapping therapy.

1. You can’t figure out what to say.

2. You’re not sure you’re doing it right.

3. You have to have a quiet, private place to do it – and that’s hard to get.

4. It takes too much effort.

5. You’re not perfect at it, so why bother.

6. It would take way too much tapping to clear all your stuff.

7. It’s too hard.

8. It’s too complicated.

9. You think you need a professional, but that’s too expensive.

10. You don’t want to take the time.

Did I name any of your excuses for not doing Emotional Tapping? Whether I did or not, I’ll tell you something.

You will feel better if you do more tapping!

Tapping energizes your body, improves your emotional state and helps you think more clearly and resourcefully.

So, if you haven’t been doing much tapping, here’s a way to get back at it.
Just tap.

That’s it. Simply tap on the meridian points.. You don’t need to talk. It may be the simplest tapping tecnhique you’ve ever seen, but don’t let that fool you!

What Happens When You Do Emotional Tapping?

Tapping on the meridians helps to resolve stuck energy patterns. So if you’re feeling a strong troubling emotion, tapping the points helps to get the energy moving and to clear the upset.

How Do You Do It?

Let’s say you notice you are upset. You may be feeling any sort of upseting emotion. You may be feeling sad, irritated, frustrated, overwhelmed, anxious, angry, resentful, guilty, ashamed, embarrassed or scared.

Simply start to tap.

Tap at the eyebrow point, then the side of the eye, then under the eye, under the nose, chin, collarbone, under the arm, then the top of the head. Tap ten or 15 times at each point. Don’t bother counting.

Then go again, from the eyebrow point to the top of the head.

After a couple of rounds stop tapping and notice what you’re thinking and feeling. If you’re still upset, tap some more.

While you’re tapping, just let your thoughts occur naturally. You don’t have to say them aloud or change them in any way.

You don’t even have to pay particular attention to your thoughts and feelings while tapping.

What You Can Expect?

The tapping will automatically help to balance out your state and bring you more understanding and clarity. While it may not totally resolve your issue, it will move you in that direction.

And even though this form of wordless tapping may not be as effective as a thorough targeted session with a set-up and lots of words…

…it is far superior to no tapping at all!

Any time you feel any sort of disturbing emotion – just tap. Nothing complicated. There’s no need to carve out a lot of time for tapping.

Tap the points. That’s the basic tapping technique.

1.  Argue with Yourself

Get a kick out of tapping – argue!  Tap giving voice to the reasons for staying stuck and the reasons for changing.  Tap why you should do something and why you shouldn’t.  Your reasons for hating something and your reasons for loving it.

This tapping technique lets two voices inside you speak.  Your inner blocks often clear.  This can make the best decision obvious.  Clarity can arise where all you felt was confusion before.

2.  Just Tap

Stimulating the meridians by tapping has several benefits.  It energizes your body, balances out excess emotion and helps clarify thinking. Also, since your unconscious programs are always running, tapping without talking helps clear them too. 

Any time you think of it, tap.  You don’t need any set-up or words, simply tap.  It’s the easiest way there is to make progress on your issues.

3.  Refuse!

Inside each of us is a bratty little kid.  Let her be heard!  He wants you to listen!  Do EFT tapping and refuse to change. 

Say things like this:  You’ll never make me change.  You can’t make me.  I will not do it.  I don’t have to.  You are not my boss.  It’s not gonna happen.  Don’t try to tell me what to do.

How you feel after doing this can be a big surprise.  Try it!

4.  Tap Appreciation

Appreciation tapping can improve your vibe, help the law of attraction work more in your favor and make your life happier.  You can tap your appreciation for anything:  the world, your home, your work, your family, someone special, your car, your left foot – anything!  It’s not what you appreciate, but how it improves your vibe.

5.  Tap a Better Future

You can seed your future with positive possibilities by beginning your tapping statements with “I’m looking forward to…”  Finish the statement with things you know will happen, expect to happen and things you hope will happen. 

If you do this tapping technique regularly, you will feel happier, improve your vibe and help you attract a more abundant life.
