How many goals have you got? No, come on, how many goals have you written down? For most individuals the answer is likely to be none. Oh sure, they might have had some goals set for them during a Performance Review at work. But , But do they own those goals?
The concept of goal setting wouldn’t have been around as long as it has if there was not some benefit in it. So why don’t people set goals?
The answer’s that they don’t know a good way to set goals that’ll be significant for them.
So , I am going to share one of my goals with you. For me this is a very important goal because it impacts every area of my life and it also affects my family. I think of this goal every day; in particular I think on this goal before I get up in the morning. My goal is quite simply to be happy.
I learned in my NLP training that by focussing on being happy I had an achievable goal. Not only is my goal reachable but I am able to work on it every day and I receive many advantages apropos friends, good health and a agreeable environment.
The first trick to setting good goals is to form goals that never depend on other people for their attainment. For instance if you create a goal of being the world number one at anything you right away enter into competition with everyone else in the world who wants to be good at that particular thing. Looked at in another way if you make it your goal to be the very best you can be at something the only person you are competing with is yourself and your own lofty standards.
The second trick to setting worthwhile and motivating goals is to write them in the present tense, as if you have already accomplished them e.g. “I am happy”. Or, “I am the best public speaker I can possibly be”.
Try setting your goals in this way and see what a difference it makes.
Imagine a precision instrument that records the actions, words and feelings of the best performers. Then download that data to a powerful decoder that analyses and codes the behaviour. Transfer the code to your personal control panel so that you can reproduce excellence at will. This is how NLP Techniques work. The way in which we value the feedback that comes our way tells us whether we are internally or externally referenced. People who are internally referenced will be cheerful, feeling good inside and telling themselves, “I did that well”, when they have finished a job. On the other hand folks who are externally referenced will need feedback from outside to assure them that things went well. They need to read feedback forms, see sales graphs rising or get the order if they’re to feel really good.
It is perhaps true that the majority of people are externally referenced. This is why a hearty pat on the back and a “well done” work so well at work.
On the other hand our NLP training tells us that it is a characteristic of very senior managers that they are able to make their own reassurance and motivation by internally referencing that they have done a good job.
Entrepreneurs who work all alone and sports players who play non-team games also incline to use the same internal referencing process. Internal referencing allows them to work without the support of the organisational or team structures that others need to support them with continuing comfort.
Team managers can motivate the people in their teams especially well when they know the referencing system that each team member uses. It becomes much simpler to create meaningful feelings for the members of a team when you know what matters to them.
Observe yourself when you create a result. Did you manage to create good feelings for yourself or did you really need to have some feedback from an external source before you felt assured and able to feel OK about the result?
You will be capable of making your life a good deal happier and more productive when you begin to understand whether you are an internal referencer or an external referencer.

The way in which you think makes a big difference to the results you get. I make this statement with great confidence because I see the results that folks get when they change the way in which they think. Interestingly no organisation seems to have done any quantitative research to support the effect of positive thinking. Just because that I have been unable to find such results does not mean that they do not exist, only that I haven’t found the necessary way to interrogate Google.
The difficulty of living in the current world is that we are consistently battered by the media with negative messages. Lots of the people around us have a negative outlook on life. Events in the world around us are reported in negative ways. So it is no surprise that it’s not hard to fall into the mindset of developing a negative outlook oneself.
But anyone who has done NLP training with a professional NLP practitioner will have found the benefits of a positive approach. The challenge is to get and maintain a positive attitude when the people in the world around you are behaving in a negative way.
The hidden key to maintaining a positive attitude is to be constantly in a state of thinking, feeling and behaving in positive ways. Being positive is not just a mental discipline, it is also an emotional discipline. It is much easier to maintain a positive state of being when you regard yourself as a positive individual. Note, a great way to view this is not as something that you will become, but rather as something you are.
From my personal experience of having coached loads of senior managers during my business coaching sessions I’ll promise you that as soon as you begin to behave as if you are already positive your targets will be reached with great ease.

There are a ton of folk out there in the world and on the Internet who claim to be right to motivate you, but which one is the best? This is an important question because you need motivation if you’re to achieve all the goals you set yourself in your private life and in your work.
From my personal experience in business coaching I have come to the view that there are two types of incentive. One has high added value and the other has only a temporary effect – knowing the difference could revolutionise your results.
When you go to a motivational rally hosted by one of the multitude of inspiring speakers you generally come away feeling A1, on a “high”. But how long does that good feeling last for? The problem is it is the speaker who is creating the good feeling, it’s not self-generated, coming from within you.
People who have been lucky enough to receive some NLP training from an experienced NLP practitioner will know that the secret of making changes in our behaviour, our feelings and thoughts is that we’ve got to get into a state of being about what we are. When you get into a state of being inspired it stays with you. It’s not something that you lose. You simply are an incentivized person.
When you study those remarkable people who achieve more than most folks you find that they are all highly self-motivated. It’s impossible to even imagine them going to observe an inspiring speaker. They don’t need outside help, all of their motivation comes from within. They are focused on their goals. They strongly believe they are going to achieve their goals. They live as if their goals are already their reality. They feel the relentless excitement of having achieved their goals because they’re so real for them.

During my 17 years of being a business coach I have met some very successful folk. Also , I’ve met a number of individuals that are just as capable as the successful people yet who have failed to succeed. So what is the difference between those that succeed and those that fail?
In our NLP training we’ve got a number of Principles of Excellence. These convictions are very important because they form the emotional bedrock that supplies the energy and the confidence for success.
I have found that the majority of the successful people that I meet hold the assumption that if one man can do it any person can do it. They never think of success as being outside their reach. They never focus on the idea of “what if I fail”; they believe only on “when I succeed”.
If you’re not currently as successful as you would like to be you need to switch your beliefs. You will only be able to change the patterns of behaviour that are presently causing you to fail when you change your beliefs.
Nothing in your behaviour will change until such time as you alter your beliefs. So as to succeed you must find beliefs that give you the power to override your own inner doubts and the doubts of those around you.
One point that I have spotted with my clients is that when their beliefs change they suddenly find that they have access to all sorts of inner resources that they never knew they had before.
Jobs which they had until now thought to be difficult out of the blue become straightforward. Goals that they had considered outside their reach suddenly become attainable.
If you don’t now have any empowering beliefs you should invent some. Write them down and work with them until you develop powerful feelings of belief. One day you may wake up believing that you can get superb results and from there on your life will change dramatically.

Today is my birthday. I love celebrating my birthday because it always creates inside me a massive injection of energy. The energy comes from the warm feeling of being loved.
But I don’t need a birthday to get a massive injection of energy. There are numerous alternative ways to energise myself. But before I tell you about those other energy raising strategies with you let’s first look at the question of, “why would you need a big injection of energy?”
What I have found in my business coaching work is that the people who get the very best results in any field of activity are the ones who put lots of energy intotheir activities. This could be be mental energy or physical energy, but some way or other they are more energetic than less successful folks.
On my NLP training programmes I usually make sure that everybody is relaxed so that their energy can flow into the learning that we’re all doing together.
Being relaxed and focused on the result that you need from your activity is the first step in reaching great results. Once you’re certain what you need to attain, and I always express this as an outcome, I make a serious effort to relax and just allow myself to get into a state of allowing things to happen.
Once I am relaxed and focused I just allow my belief in the significance of what I’m doing to steer me. The energy comes from my belief. If I’m in a state of doubt about the result the energy level is always lower and I find that I am not able to force it up. If I attempt to force the energy I begin to feel stressed.
So an important part of my description of the result that I need from anything I do is that I must believe that it’s important, not just for me but for the other folks that are likely to be impacted. Once that belief is in place I find that the energy just flows naturally.

Many small businesses proprietors find that working with a coach is one of the best decisions they ever made. Yet there are many essential things to think about before you actually decide to go out and find a coach. The focus of this short article will be on some essential criteria to look at if you’re seeking a small business coach.
Before you decide to employ a small business coach, you should think about your budget. A good advisor can be a very advantageous investment, but you have to take an honest look at your financial situation and decide what you can afford. The costs of guidance varies quite a bit, and while this should not be your main consideration, you do have to think about it. You won’t want to pay for a coach that you need for essential business or living expenses. However, you can also consider coaching an important investment in your business’s future. The spending budget you assign for coaching is something only you can figure out, but it’s an important issue you must address. How much you can afford for mentoring is something to be clear about before you begin the process.
If you want a small business coach, it’s best to identify someone who has experience with small businesses. There are some excellent coaches who have been effective with multinational companies, but who may not have the right kind of experience to understand your particular challenges and issues. A private coach who generally works with employees of large corporations will have a different perspective that may not be relevant to your needs. Small businesses are distinctive in several ways, so it’s important that you work with someone who can relate to your situation. Quite a few coaches are experts in working with small businesses. Others may help a variety of clients, which is fine, as long as they are comfortable and familiar with smaller businesses. Martin has been discussing about such topics for numerous years now and he has of late started to help people on the subject matter of day trading.
An effective coach is going to support you to improve your actions and outlook, so you have to be ready for this. If you aren’t at this point, there is no point in consulting with someone who’s going to be making recommendations. Guidance is focused on identifying areas where modification is needed. While a good mentor can point you in the right direction, it is still up to you to take the appropriate action. When you’re unwilling to change, it will be difficult for the coach to get through to you. So before you embark on any coaching, make a decision that you’re willing to try something new. Then you’ll definitely stay in a position to enjoy some real benefits from small business coaching.
Small business coaching can make a big difference in the improvement and profitability of your business. Guidance, however, is a method that requires your full participation if it’s going to be successful. The above mentioned details should be carefully considered before you actually hire a small business coach. In the end, if you’re likely to invest your time and money into this, you want to get the most out of it.

Have you ever noticed how occasionally you have gots tons of energy and on other occasions you just feel so dozy that you cannot be bothered to do even the easiest of things?
And, have you also observed that when you have lots of energy everything appears easier?
It’s amazing the difference it makes when we feel optimistic about life in general and what we are doing in particular.
In NLP training we teach people a presupposition or belief that “behind every behaviour is a unconscious positive intention”. What’s cool about this unconscious positive goal is that when that unconscious positive aim is excellent for us we have lots of energy and when it isn’t so good for us we have a tendency to lack energy.
Now, here’s the point – when you notice that you do not have the energy you want the time has arrived to go hunting for the unconscious thoughts that are depriving you of the energy you need to get a result. In my past experiences you’ll always find that there is something going on in the background that is making you feel “not so good” about what you think you ought to be doing.
Simply by finding the reason that is causing you to feel bad and flipping it over to find the opposite positive you’ll find that you change around to feel great. This is what I call turning negative thoughts and feelings into positively charged thoughts and feelings. The positive is almost always on the flip side of the negative.
The challenge is to find and admit to the negative in order that you can flip it to a positive and find the energy to do what you need to do. There are times when it can take courage to intentionally go hunting for feelings that are making you feel bad. But have no fear, you will find that you mostly feel better when you see what is hurting you and make the effort to turn yourself to feel the opposite. That is where you find the energy to get things done.

You have, no doubt, heard the expression, “start with the end in mind.” Well, if you would like to achieve excellence that is a handy thought. Because if you commence with excellence in mind your chances of achieving excellence will be considerably higher.
Let us say you are arranging a display, and you would like to ensure it is the best, would it make sense to begin with an image of you resuming your seat at the end of the show to ringing applause?
I talk lots about NLP techniques and about modeling. One of the principles of successful modeling is to model people whose performance is excellent in the situation in which you would like to achieve excellence in your own performance.
The challenge for most people is that they find it simple to use old, poor habits. One such habit that may cause unacceptable performance is approaching a difficult task or project with a feeling of dread.
When a confirmed habit of not feeling great about a task is exacerbated by poor self-talk the entire project can be put at rish before it has even got off the ground. When you assert to yourself things like: “I’m no good at this type of thing.” You are programming yourself for a second rate performance before you have even started.
There are any number of “weak performance” phrases that we often use use to pre-programme themselves for a bad performance, phrases like: “I’ve never been any good at tasks like this.” Or, “I feel totally out of my depth.” Or, “I just know I will not be able to do it.”
Give yourself every chance of a superb result by changing your internal chat to “strong performance” phrases.
So , in an example where you were seeking to make a superb presentation you would hold that picture and thought of excellence in your mind all of the time that you were planning, preparing, rehearsing and delivering your presentation. Then say to yourself: “This is wonderful, what an opportunity, I am really going to shine”.
As an NLP Practitioner my mission is, “to help you to make changes in your thinking, your feelings and your behaviour that will make your performance excellent both at work and in your personal life”. I get results for the staff of major companies like Dell, Yves St.Laurent, J&J, RBI, GM and P&O through business coaching using NLP Techniques.
