However, researchers at the Medical College of Georgia found that less than an hour of daily exercise can reduce depressive symptoms and improve self esteem in overweight children. “Just by getting up and doing something aerobic, they were changing how they felt about themselves,” says the study’s first author, Dr. Karen Petty, postdoctoral fellow in psychology at MCG’s Georgia Prevention Institute. Even if the kids did not lose weight, they got their heart pumping at jumping rope, running, playing basketball and kicking a soccer ball around. Petty adds: “If you feel better about yourself, maybe you are going to do better in school, maybe you are going to pay more attention.”

Figuring out how to improve your self esteem should not be done alone if you have suffered with drug or alcohol abuse. In a 2006 study published in BMC Psychiatry, researchers John-KÃ¥re Vederhus and Øistein Kristensen studied 114 patients — 59 with alcohol dependency and 55 with multiple drug dependencies who started self help programs after addiction treatment. Two years later, 38% of the patients still regularly participated in positive self esteem programs. Researchers discovered that 81% of those participating in building esteem programs had been abstinent for the past 6 months, compared to 26% of non-participants. Co-dependents Anonymous is a program for people who have felt trapped in relationships because they “need” the other person to feel happy. While there are no reports published on the long-term effectiveness of such programs, many participants reported too many obstacles in building self confidence prior to entering the program and found the immersive, supportive atmosphere to be helpful in their quest for happiness.
