I have always wanted to be a success and to have a happy life, I am sure this is the same for most people. In the early part of my life I was unable to achieve both of these aims; this was partly because I had a stuttering problem. In my early to mid twenties I decided to attempt to learn about ways in which I could ensure that the future would be a lot better, than what the past had been. I soon began to read literature about these subjects in my quest to improve my life.
I soon realised the importance of setting goals and targets and was hopeful that this could help me to stop stuttering. I thought about what I wanted to be and which course I wanted my life to take. I wrote out three different lists of my aims for the future.
The first list included what I wanted to achieve within the next twelve months. The second list contained what I wanted to achieve within five years and the third list was my lifetime goals – one of which was to own my own company selling composite front doors.
Avoid negative people
There are people out there who try to bring me down. Nasty comments, dirty looks and gossiping were all things that these nasty people would do. They would treat me as if I was some sort of freak and as if I was one of life’s losers. These type of people have caused me many sleepless nights and have had a negative affect on my self-confidence.
I knew that I had to steer well clear from these bad influences; this can however be easier said than done.
I am pleased to report that I have now overcome the speech impediment – life is now far much happier for me.

It was quite strange, there did not seem to be a catalyst to my daughters anger problem, there was no family break or other trauma which you would normally associate with such an issue. It seemed to gradually grow, my daughter laughs about it now and has stated that she did not understand what was wrong with her at the time and just put it down to puberty.
During the period, she threw cups at her bedroom wall, slapped her mum, banged her head on a wall and many other crazy acts. As parents her mother and I were at a loss as to what to do. We tried to talk to her in a calm and controlled way, to ask her if anything was wrong or troubling her. We tried to in a way buy her affection back, this sounds so stupid now.
We were however to be quite fortunate. Our daughter actually approached us, after around six months of acting in this way, to ask for help. She realised that she was always seemingly in a bad mood and wanted it to end.
We looked for help via the doctor and searched on the internet. We eventually found an anger management specialist in London who stated that he could help. It was not cheap but we decided to give it a go.
He talked to her about many aspects of her life and she seemed to enjoy chatting with him. Part of the problem happened to be her diet, part was the fact that she was going to bed too late and therefore not getting enough sleep, the other area was the fact that she thought that her parents still treated her like a child.
The sessions lasted for around two months and I will be ever grateful to that anger specialist.
We’ve all found it rather difficult to develop personal growth in communicating our feelings or thoughts to someone else. Forming all the emotions and thoughts that are jumbled in our heads to a sentence or two can be challenging. However, we must interact with one another, because it’s what makes this large world go ’round. Instead of becoming frustrated, and assuming that the world just doesn’t understand us, we should first try to understand others. You can gain personal growth in communication with others, and here are but a few ways to help you achieve this:
Relax
Don’t become so wrapped up in how something should be or what would make it better. When you communicate with someone, and you develop preconceived notions on how they should be, you turn them off. Try not to be so firm in your beliefs until you completely hear what the other has to say. Taking your time to understand someone, that is the trick. If you don’t have time for someone else, why, praytell, should they have time for you?
Probe
Begin to ask questions when you communicate with someone. After all, people don’t naturally walk up to others and explain everything they feel, want, like, and have been through. When you ask someone who you’re communicating with questions, they feel as though you actually care, and they will start asking you questions. Probing questions are what makes conversations. For example, if a person says they like to eat cheesecake, a good question would be, “What kind?” Simple as it is, it is rather effective, and keeps the conversing on a consistent and non-invasive level.
Listen
A question that is often asked of people is, if they should wait to speak, or actually listen. Forming statements or questions in our heads, and focusing solely on them until the person we’re talking to takes a breath in speech is rude, and reckless. When you abandon a person by waiting to talk we show them that we weren’t very interested to begin with, and rather selfish in this right.
Speak… Honestly
Lies are often uttered to total strangers. These are only white lies, but they are lies, nonetheless. When you meet anyone, or talk to existing friends or family, try to speak with honesty. The more honest you are, the more personal development you can gain in building integrity. When you speak honestly, you won’tt speak or do something opposite to what you feel. Try to apply this concept to every encounter that you have.
Be the Host
Let’s say, for instance, you go to a party. It’s a small gathering, maybe no more than forty people, and you have to mingle. You can communicate very well by thinking of yourself as the host of the party. Now, don’t lie and say things such as, “this event cost me a lot of money. Do you like it?” Try to stay in your own roll or flesh as partygoer, but be as inviting, friendly, and comfortable as a host should be. People will begin to flock to you, going to you for your command of entertainment and conversation.
Balance Yourself
You can most definitely gain personal growth in communication once you simply treat people the same way that you would like to be treated. A warning to you: the more friendly and sociable you become, the more responsibility you hold. You must compare your actions with your words. Your feelings must be expressed in a non-attacking manner. Build those relationships, and further develop personal growth in communication skills.
It goes without saying that we all make errors in life however the most successful people do not let it get them down and try to treat these mistakes as a learning curve.
My parents taught me a lot of things about life and I clearly remember my father sitting me down when I was around fourteen years of age and speaking to me about this subject. He stated that he thought I was a decent person who knew right from wrong, he was however aware that I would make some mistakes. I was a person that had a speech imediment, commonly known as stuttering. I became street wise and mature at a far earlier stage than the majority of kids my age – this was no doubt in part due to having the stutter.
He continued that he would not ask me to come home by a certain point at night and that he would let me make my own choices. If I had made some sort of crazy error or decision; or perhaps I had acted in a wrong way he would just sit me down and say: OK now I am not particularly impressed with what you have done there son; he would then ask whether I also believed that what I had done was wrong etc. I would, of course, agree with my father as I want the whole episode to be forgotten as quickly as possible. After agreeing in this way I would be fine unless I somehow made the same error again in the future. He would then in his words, come down on me like a ton of bricks.
I agreed that this seemed fair and carried on living my life. I wondered what he had meant by the ton of bricks statement. I did make many mistakes and we had to have our chat on many occasions, I am happy to say that I did learn from my errors and never had to find out what he had meant.
I am somebody who loves playing sport. I am very competitive and do not like losing. There will be those occasions where I am not triumphant; I reluctantly accept this fact. I do however not like losing and I therefore start to analyze what went wrong; how can I ensure that I win next time around? What could I do differently next time I play to ensure the result is a positive one?
It is the same in business where I sell composite doors and also a business cost cutting service; I am always eager to try and reach that next level up.
I certainly learned a lot from the many lessons in life that my parents gave me and I aim to share these lessons with my own children.

I decided to ease up on myself and to even have monthly treats to keep me and my body happy. I did this by attending reflexology sessions and for a short period I tried aromatherapy. After working extremely hard with copious amounts of dedication I did manage to achieve fluency – I was very proud of my efforts as you can no doubt imagine.
