Looking good has become one of our mandates of society. We all need to present our best face forward, along with our best look, best body, and best hair. There is constant pressure to make sure that we never stray from the done up, well toned, clear skin look that we emulate in models and TV. Yes, we model these unrealistic people after what we want to see rather than the other way around.
Products like acai berry, benzoyl peroxide, wrinkle prevention cream, and salicylic acid skin care are not created because the industry is trying to help you look like a supermodel. They were created to fill a need. While skin care info is all over the place, we choose what we feel works because we never want to age and we never want to appear to have been fighting blemishes all of our lives. We say it’s the media’s fault. Yet when we put heavy people in the limelight, we criticize them just as hard and viciously as our mothers criticized us.
We actually want to choose to be supermodel material because we tend to believe that this is what beauty really is. In some ways it is, sure, but it is far from the only way to look good for life. Our daily regimen is set up to allow us the freedom of creating our own beauty to the best of our ability.
Of course, almost all of these products are targeted at women despite the fact that men are just as susceptible to blemishes and weight gain. The average working class woman spends between $1500 and $3000 annually on skin care and weight loss products while men tend to spend only around $500 per year.
When we start to see that we are not going to be perfect individuals, we still chase the weight loss and clear face products all over town until we can finally find what we are looking for.
Looking good and being the best that we can be often goes hand in hand. Being charged up about your body and your face just bolsters your confidence, often high enough to give you courage when you are about to enter a room full of strangers or are about to meet a blind date.
We aren’t interested in becoming supermodels ourselves, but if there’s a product on the market that will slim our waist line, eliminate the wrinkles we’ve collected, and keep our face free from pimples for the rest of our lives, we will buy it. We will buy it even if we aren’t sure that it works.
